Oriire schoolchildren: Oyo teachers to resume work Thursday

Oriire schoolchildren: Oyo teachers to resume work Thursday

Classrooms in Oyo State will today be thrown open to students as striking teachers return to work in compliance with the suspension of the strike ordered by the Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT).

The strike was ordered by the union to press for the release of schoolchildren abducted by bandits in Oriire in Oyo State.

NUT hinged the strike’s suspension on what it considered renewed engagements with the state government and assurances over measures to improve security.

The union said in a statement by its Oyo State Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Olukayode Salami, yesterday its national leadership, after reviewing the prevailing security situation and considering appeals by the Oyo State government and other key stakeholders, had a rethink.

It revealed that the government assured that it would strengthen the Safe School Initiative through public sensitisation and early warning systems, improve emergency response mechanisms, address criminal hideouts, upgrade school infrastructure, tackle illegal mining and open grazing in forest reserves, enhance community intelligence gathering, ensure speedy prosecution of criminal suspects, improve the welfare of security personnel, and deploy technology to bolster school security.
