FG Proposes Shared AI Computing Infrastructure With Rwanda, Senegal, Kenya
Nigeria Moves to Strengthen Africa’s Artificial Intelligence Capacity Through Regional Collaboration
The Federal Government of Nigeria has proposed a shared artificial intelligence (AI) computing infrastructure with Rwanda, Senegal and Kenya as part of efforts to strengthen Africa’s capacity to develop, train and run advanced AI models.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed the proposal on Wednesday in Abuja during the Build 2026 conference, organised by the Nigeria AI Collective.
Tijani explained that the initiative would enable participating countries to pool their graphics processing unit (GPU) resources, allowing them to handle complex computing tasks that may exceed the capacity of individual countries.
Graphics processing units are essential to artificial intelligence development because they provide the computing power required to train models, process large datasets and run demanding AI applications.
According to the minister, sharing these resources could improve access to computing infrastructure across participating countries, potentially reducing the limitations faced by African researchers, developers, startups and technology companies seeking to build AI-powered solutions.
The proposed collaboration also reflects growing efforts to strengthen regional cooperation in digital technology and expand Africa’s participation in the global AI ecosystem.
By combining computing resources, the participating countries could explore opportunities to support AI research, innovation and the development of solutions tailored to Africa’s economic and social needs.
